a sense of the subject’s personality.

and portrait photography disciplines and has taught digital photographic and Photoshop skills to professional photographers across Canada and into the U.S.

The Studio

Frazer Studio of Photography came to Brandon in 1989 and has a strong reputation for high quality and personal one on one service. Our clients most often become our friends. The mission of this business is to deliver the finest quality portraiture and make the experience from beginning to end, very enjoyable. The home base is Brandon, where location photography of all types from portraiture to commercial assignments are done. Every year the studio makes a move starting on the May long weekend, to Clear Lake for the summer season. "Frazer Studio by the Lake", has been creating precious memories for families for many years. Their location at Scraces has been open in the summer for 15 years.

One unique aspect of Frazer Studio is that all of the prints and canvasses made are hand crafted by the artist, printed and framed in house. Mr. Frazer has a passion for the fine print and has led many workshops over the years in that subject.

The Vision

The process of having a portrait made is a very personal experience and very important in the life of your family.  Your session will be treated with the importance and respect it deserves. We strive to create beautiful and timeless portraits that you and your family will enjoy for a lifetime. Finally we also want to make the entire process from beginning to end, an enjoyable and memorable experience.

Lake

We specialize in creating beautiful scenic outdoor portraiture in the summer at Clear Lake.  Although this is the "Lake" section of the website, your portrait

session could be at Clear Lake, or at your farm, home or any location that is special to you. Riding Mountain National Park is a magical place – one of the most beautiful in the country. Many families have a very personal connection to the park through annual camping trips or the rental or ownership of a cottage in the area. In the summer months Frazer by the Lake is located at 130 Wasagaming Drive, in the village of Wasagaming, next to Clear Lake.

The approach to this style of portraiture is similar to studio portraiture, in that the quality of light is of critical importance. The middle of the day has very harsh and unflattering light. The light is softer at both ends of the day so all sessions are photographed in the morning or the evening.  The location for the photography session is discussed and chosen with you, and depends in part on the time of day it’s scheduled and to some extent, the weather. If there are small children in the group, it is often better to choose a morning appointment so that they are fresh. You can also include props like your boat, if you wish.

This kind of session is casual and laid back. We spend up to an hour having fun and photographing different compositions and groupings so that you have plenty of images to choose from. "Lake Casual" clothing is recommended.  Shorts, simple shirts, summer pastels and sandals or bare feet look best here. We

recommend avoiding strong colours and patterns in your clothing, so that they do not distract the viewer from seeing the people and their expressions.

Our Frazer by the Lake studio is located just behind the Scraces building and has a mini-theatre that allows you to see your images in an ideal environment.  Your images are projected at this session and can be shown in a calibrated display so there is no guessing what size the image will look once it is delivered. We can also show you simulated room views, with your portrait in various sizes, so you can choose the one that suits you best. The session in which you view and order your images is normally done the morning following the portrait session. If you are only at the lake for a few days, it is easy to have the session done and your images chosen before you leave the Park.

The family is one of nature's masterpieces.

Art

Ken Frazer has slowly been adding to his collection of striking photographic art pieces of the Clear Lake area for over a decade. Many clients have followed this progress and added images to their collection as it grows. Getting a print is a way to take a piece of the beauty of Riding Mountain National Park and live with it in the cold off-season we have in Manitoba. We even have clients that spend winters in the south and decorate their home there with these pieces to remind them of the Park in the winter.

The images feature iconic views that are instantly recognizable to many who are familiar with the sights of the park. They are created with attention to detail and care to get the point of view and light absolutely perfect. They are printed on archival canvas which is mounted on gallery wrapped stretcher bars so you can pick up your print and hang it on the wall immediately.  This canvas has a special coating to protect the surface over the years. It is printed using the finest technology available today with pigment based inks that have archival properties. There has never been a time in photography that print materials have been nearly this good, both in terms of longevity and the brilliant range of colour that can be reproduced. A variety of sizes and prices are available. Normally prints are made to order and are ready for delivery in a week.

FAQ  |  How does it work?

  • Why Frazer  Studio

Ken Frazer HLM, MPA, F.Ph. has been a professional photographer his entire working life.  He started this work in his teens and is now in his fifth decade in the

industry.  He has seen many changes over that time, but most especially, the improvement of the art and craft of photography.  The equipment available today leads some to believe that they can be “instant” photographers, but it takes years

to perfect your craft and be considered a professional.

A session with Frazer Studio guarantees you will have an experience that is positive from start to finish. You will have great memories to look back on those

chapters of your life. The most valuable thing you will collect in life will be your relationships, not things. Enjoy those relationships through the art of photography.

  • Consultation and Schedule

Just call us at 204-727-8884  or send us an email at info@frazerstudio.com and we will schedule a planning session or send you information that will help you prepare for your portrait session. At the lake studio, we photograph sessions 7 days a week so weekend appointments are welcome. In Brandon, at our home studio, we are open by appointment from Tuesday to Saturday.

  • Photography Session

A studio session can take a half hour to an hour to complete. Our outdoor environmental sessions take almost the same amount of time, plus the travel time to go to and from the location. Every effort is taken to make this experience as fun and relaxed as possible. Our clients often remark that they did not expect it to be as much fun as it was.

  • View and Choose

This is the session that you see all of your results! The blinks have been taken out so you are going to see the best images from your session. In our theatre style presentation, we can show your images in exactly the size you choose, so you are confident the right size has been chosen. We follow the same process in Brandon and Clear Lake, but we tend to do this session the day after photography at the lake, whereas we might show our studio portraits a week after the session. There is a great deal of flexibility in the time you may choose your images.

The actual choice of the best images is done by comparing on a very large screen, and narrowing them down to the best of the best. This session takes about an hour normally. When you have completed your order, we ask for a deposit that will cover one half of the total cost, and collect the balance when the order is done.  MasterCard, Visa, Debit, cheques and cash are all accepted. Final orders take approximately six to eight weeks to complete and can be shipped to wherever you live.

  • Pricing

Our method of pricing comprises a session fee and your choice of a variety of a la carte items. Session fees begin at seventy-five and go to one hundred fifty dollars depending on the size of group and location.  Desk sized retouched portraits start at $79 and decrease in cost with quantity ordering. Our canvas wrapped archival wall portraits start at $650 and go up to about $1400. We do have some multi image composites on mini canvas frames that fit in between those price ranges.

Our portraits are all hand printed on the finest and most archival print materials available today. They far exceed the quality of materials we used in the film days in both longevity and the breadth of colour that they can reproduce. We can discuss pricing in detail at your consultation so you know what your investment will be.

Decades of experience will assure you that the portrait created will exceed your expectations. A studio environment is a place where you can clear away the visual clutter of busy props and backgrounds that you know will be out of style as fast as they became in style. It is possible to create compelling and unique compositions without restrictions. Lighting can be refined and make the portraits pop off the page.
